This year’s fire safety theme Fire Prevention week theme Charge into Fire Safety highlights the growing importance of safe battery use and charging practices in our homes, workplaces, and communities.
The Volunteer Firefighters Association of BC fully supports the ongoing efforts of the Office of the Fire Commissioner of British Columbia and NFPA to bring greater awareness to fire safety and to encourage everyone to take simple but important steps to reduce the risk of fire.
With the increasing number of electronic devices we rely on every day, battery charging safety has become a serious fire safety concern worldwide. Phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, scooters, and many other devices commonly use rechargeable batteries. While these technologies provide tremendous convenience, improper charging, damaged batteries, incompatible equipment, or modified charging systems can create significant fire risks.
This issue has recently hit a well known bike shop on Vancouver Island being significantly affected by a Lithium-Ion battery fire. Incidents such as this serve as an important reminder that battery safety must be taken seriously.
Help Prevent Battery Fires
When charging rechargeable devices and batteries:
- Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Use only approved chargers and charging equipment designed for the specific battery or device.
- Never modify batteries, chargers, or charging systems.
- Do not attempt to charge or discharge batteries at rates beyond those for which they were designed.
- Avoid charging damaged, swollen, overheating, or otherwise compromised batteries.
- Keep charging devices away from combustible materials.
- Do not block exits or escape routes with charging equipment.
- When possible, charge batteries in a safe location where they can be monitored.
Fire safety begins with awareness and simple everyday actions. By understanding the risks associated with rechargeable batteries and following safe charging practices, we can all help protect our families, homes, businesses, and communities.
